Alexa Wimberly started two rallies for Southlake Carroll in Game 1 of a Class 5A bi-district series Thursday and the second proved the most damaging to Arlington Martin.
The senior shortstop led off the sixth with a single to left and scored to start a four-run outburst as Carroll picked up a 6-3 victory at Workman Field.
Game 2 of the best-of-three series shifts to Southlake at 6:30 p.m. Friday.
For Wimberly, the outburst was better late than never.
“I haven’t had anything like that all season,” the Arkansas Tech recruit said. “I’ve had solid hits in kind of an every-other-at-bat thing, but tonight I just felt comfortable with what I was seeing. And honestly, I realized we’re wrapping things up, and I don’t want it to end.”
After Wimberly scored to tie the game on Lauren Heintzelman’s RBI single, Sydney Bedford added an RBI single for Carroll (18-12). That left pitcher Alex Schneider to drive in Heintzelman and Bedford with a double to left.
Schneider picked up her ninth victory, despite giving up 11 hits.
Martin pitcher Lacey Mann struck out 10, but dropped to 11-3 this season.
“We just had too many mistakes,” Martin coach Cathy Rudy said. “I think we took a lot of confidence out of this game, but the mistakes we made were critical and it cost us tonight.”
Jordyn James had two RBI hits for Martin and was 3 for 3 with a sacrifice.
The Warriors (26-4) jumped to an early lead after RBI doubles by Krista Rude and James for a 2-0 lead just six pitches into the game.
Carroll went to work as well, but stranded five runners before Wimberly started a two-run rally in the fourth. She doubled to left and scored on an error before Emily Kemins picked up an RBI with a sacrifice bunt to make it 2-2.
