Luis Nunez had to have seen it from the start. The Arlington Lamar goalie needed one more shootout stop to give his Vikings a playoff victory over Keller Fossil Ridge. When Anthony Powell’s shot went low and right, Nunez was there to meet it.
Lamar beat Fossil Ridge 3-2 in a shootout after going scoreless in regulation and overtime in the Class 5A bi-district round at Birdville Fine Arts/Athletics Complex. The Vikings will play El Paso Eastwood in the area round next week.
Rolando Hernandez scored the clinching goal for Lamar in the shootout. His low, left shot fooled Fossil Ridge goalie Joaquin Garcia.
Lamar was the aggressor for most of the first half. The Vikings got shots off on several occasions but failed to connect.
Eight minutes into the game, Osseil Maldonado was able to break toward the right side of the goal in a one-on-one situation with Garcia. Garcia deflected Maldonado’s shot, resulting in a corner kick that also was unsuccessful.
Later in the half, Fossil Ridge’s Cody Seidel was able to get a break toward the goal that was eventually foiled by Nunez.
Late in the second 10-minute overtime, Powell was able to beat a Lamar defender to within a few yards of the goal, and Nunez came out to meet him. Powell was able to get a shot off, but the ball trickled left of the goal.
Coming back down the other end, Carlos Flores weaved through several defenders to fire a long shot on goal, but it sailed high.
