The Mansfield Lake Ridge girls soccer team held Crowley scoreless the final 76 minutes en route to a 3-1 victory Tuesday night at Newsom Stadium in both teams’ final District 16-4A game of the season.
The loss dropped Crowley to 5-7-2 in district play, slipping the Eagles to fifth in district. They entered Tuesday tied with Mansfield Summit. Lake Ridge had already locked up the No. 2 seed out of 16-4A, improving to 11-3 in league play.
Lake Ridge’s Eryn Harrington scored within the first 50 seconds. Harrington found a seam in the middle of the field, putting the ball into the top right side of the goal.
But Crowley responded with a goal less than three minutes later when Chelsea Crook’s floater over the middle slipped through the hands of Lake Ridge goalie Brooke Lampe.
The best play of the night was the go-ahead goal for Lake Ridge, a score from Toni Armenta, who directed Harrington’s long assist pass into the back of the net with 15:29 left in the first half.
Cayla Payne (Lake Ridge) and Jolyn Noble were the aggressors for each team Tuesday night, despite neither scoring a goal.
Payne continually pushed the ball up the field for Lake Ridge and added an assist to Ashley Sarmiento with 5:48 left in the half.
Noble created the best chances for Crowley. Her best opportunity came with 35:21 left. She broke past Lake Ridge’s pair of defenders, leaving just her and Lampe from about 10 yards out.
But Lampe was able to get her left hand on the shot, deflecting it slightly and forcing it to curve right, wide of the goal.
