Carthage quarterback Blake Bogenschutz threw for 393 yards and six touchdowns as the Bulldogs routed La Grange 51-22 in a Class 3A Division I state semifinal Friday at Newsom Stadium.
Carthage (14-1) will face Saturday’s winner between Stephenville (12-1) and Kilgore (13-0) in the championship game at noon Friday at AT&T Stadium in Arlington.
It was Carthage’s explosiveness vs. La Grange’s ball control, and Bogenschutz, a UT San Antonio commitment, picked apart the Leopards’ defense.
Bogenschutz found North Texas signee Terian Goree for a 33-yard touchdown pass on the Bulldogs’ third snap of the game to give Carthage a 7-0 lead.
La Grange (13-1) answered with a 13-play, 72-yard drive capped by a 6-yard scoring pass from Dillon Davis to Rodney Filmore to tie the score 7-7 with 4:04 left in the first quarter.
From that point the Carthage defense took over, forcing two punts and a turnover on downs, while Bogenschutz tossed two 45-yard TD passes — one to Goree and another to Keldrean Strong to give the Bulldogs a 21-7 lead at the half.
La Grange took the second-half kickoff and scored on a 3-yard run by Bralon Hutchison, but Carthage answered with 23 unanswered points.
Bogenschutz tossed a screen pass to Tevin Pipkin that went 54 yards for a touchdown, Jimmy Gonzalez kicked a 23-yard field goal, and Bogenschutz tossed a perfect fade to Goree from 10 yards out to give Carthage a 37-14 lead with 1:54 left in the third quarter.
Goree led the Bulldogs with 11 catches for 175 yards and Rutherford added five receptions for 109 yards.
