BEDFORD — It took four conversions on fourth down, it took the nose of the football plus plenty of power, sweat and determination.
Eventually, Euless Trinity’s signature grinding offense broke open a 37-19 victory against Arlington Martin in a Class 5A Division I regional semifinal Friday at Pennington Field. The Trojans (11-2) meet the winner of today’s game between Arlington and Coppell.Late in the third quarter, Trinity led by a mere four points, 23-19. The Trojans started a drive at their own 32 yard line with 2:24 left before the fourth quarter. It proved the type of plodding, powerful march that has defined Trinity football. The Trojans converted on fourth-and-1 four times, including once at the 48-yard line that required a measurement that just nudged the snout of the pigskin.Trinity faced fourth down at the 1 when quarterback Willie Hubbard pushed across on second effort as Trinity took a 30-19 lead. The drive took 7:58 seconds and ended with 6:26 left to play."I think [Trinity’s] a very good, very physical football team," Martin coach Bob Wager said. "For three quarters we went toe-to-toe and fought as hard as we possibly could. The drive where they got three fourth-down tries and got all of them by that much, I think that’s the difference in the game."Martin (8-5) took a 7-0 lead midway through the first quarter behind the explosive playmaking of running back Danzel Williams. The junior gained 37 yards on the drive, including a short touchdown run from a wildcat formation. Williams scored on another short run to give Martin another lead. He finished with 123 rushing yards, two touchdowns and an interception on defense. But Martin’s final points came on two field goals by Jaden Oberkrom, the second of which was a 54-yarder as time expired in the first half to cut Trinity’s lead to 23-19. The Trojans defense pitched a shutout in the second half to secure the victory."I was proud of our defense for making some big-time adjustments at halftime," Trinity coach Steve Lineweaver said. "They do so much with their motion and formations that we were back on our heels. We just said trust your keys, play on your toes and we went out and made plays."Tobias Xavier Lopez, 817-390-7760
