Force Freeze looks to leave older competition on ice

Star-Telegram Staff Writer

POST TIME 6:35 p.m.Star-Telegram horse racing writer Gary West highlights his picks for today's races. Odds are provided by Lone Star Park, with program number, post position (where different), jockey, trainer and weight. The thoroughbred racing season continues through July 27.

FIFTH RACE: At first glance, this seems an odd place to find Force Freeze, in the fifth race on a Thursday night at Lone Star Park. On the other hand, this could be the perfect place to prepare for the Hirsch Jacobs Stakes, which will be run May 17 at Pimlico, as a prelude to the Preakness. And that is indeed the plan.

A flashy 3-year-old who appears to have a bright future, Force Freeze won his first two races in audacious style, by a total of 12 1/2 lengths.

He'll face older horses tonight. Still, he's capable of controlling the pace, and he has been performing at a higher level than any of his rivals have seen lately. In other words, he's a very probable winner, his chances being only slightly less than John McCain's chances of getting the Republican nomination.

But Force Freeze's odds are going to be unattractively low. That means the multi-horse investments could be the best way to make a Force Freeze victory rewarding, keying him on top of Golden State and Our Sacred Honor.

SIXTH RACE: This is an outstanding allowance race. Every filly in here has been competing in stakes company. Senora Tormenta is probably the one to beat. Festive Rain, who ran third behind Senora Tormenta, is also capable, although today's distance (7 1/2 furlongs) might be a little short for her.

And then there's Aptiseno, a 3-year-old who's taking on her elders. She returns to the grass after two poor outings on dirt, but this could be her surface, just where she wants to be. She gave a performance on turf last year that hinted at uncommon talent. At Remington Park she drew clear to win by more than five lengths, easily defeating Taptam, who won here Sunday.

That performance, quite simply, was better than what most of her elders here are capable of giving. And Aptiseno could be several lengths better tonight when she returns to the turf as a 3-year-old.
