The news that University of Texas basketball player Andrew Jones was diagnosed with leukemia shook the college basketball world Wednesday morning.
That night, the Longhorns rallied to beat No. 16 TCU in double overtime to cap an emotional day in Austin.
Prayers and thoughts from across the country flooded social media. Video of Longhorns players carrying Jones’ No. 1 jersey after the win went viral.
“It’s only January, but that @TexasMBB win felt like March,” political pundit and Texas ex Paul Begala posted on Twitter. “Tears in the eyes of Coach [Shaka] Smart. All the Horns are pointing to Andrew Jones’ #1, stitched on their jerseys.”
West Virginia coach Bob Huggins posted a message of support to Jones and the entire Texas basketball program.
“I say to Andrew, along with his family and the Texas Men’s Basketball program, you are in our prayers and we are here if you all need anything,” Huggins wrote. “Basketball is just a game — family, blood or not, overshadows everything.”
