TCU quarterback Trevone Boykin joined three fellow signal-callers from the Big 12 among the 17 semifinalists for the 2015 Davey O’Brien National Quarterback Award, given to the nation’s top college quarterback.
Boykin, an O’Brien Award finalist last year, is among a group of semifinalists that includes Baylor’s Seth Russell, Texas Tech’s Patrick Mahomes, Oklahoma’s Baker Mayfield and Houston’s Greg Ward, Jr.
The list, announced Monday, will be trimmed to three finalists on Nov. 24, with the winner announced live during The Home Depot College Football Awards on Dec. 10.
The recipient will be honored Feb. 15, 2016 at the Fort Worth Club.
Never miss a local story.
Boykin, a senior, has led the fifth-ranked Horned Frogs (8-0, 5-0 in Big 12) into contention for a Big 12 title and College Football Playoff berth.
If he wins the award, he would become the first quarterback from TCU to receive the honor named for the former TCU quarterback who won the 1938 Heisman Trophy.
The list included 17 semifinalists, rather than the typical 16, because Russell received the necessary votes but suffered a season-ending neck injury in Baylor’s last game.
Florida State football: Dalvin Cook and Everett Golson returned to practice as No. 17 Florida State began preparations for Saturday’s game at third-ranked Clemson. Cook, the nation’s second-leading rusher, did not practice last week after suffering an ankle injury in a 22-16 loss at Georgia Tech. Golson remains listed as the starting quarterback on the depth chart, but was held out of last Saturday’s game due to a concussion.
North Carolina basketball: The Tar Heels, who return four starters and nine of their 10 top scorers from the team that reached the round of 16 in the 2015 NCAA tournament, are No. 1 in The Associated Press preseason Top 25 for a record ninth time. North Carolina had been tied with UCLA, which has had eight preseason No. 1 rankings.
Ohio State football: Quarterback J.T. Barrett will forfeit his summer financial aid as part of his punishment for being cited for operating a vehicle while impaired. Barrett was cited for the misdemeanor early Saturday morning by Columbus, Ohio police and suspended one game.
TCU soccer: Bobbi Clemmer made the All-Big 12 first team for the second time in her career. She is one of three Frogs to be honored by the league’s coaches. Michelle Prokof and Emma Heckendorn made the second team. Clemmer has been honored by conference coaches in each of her four seasons at TCU.
