Former TCU defensive end and Big 12 preseason defensive player of the year Devonte Fields is now a member of the Stephen F. Austin football team, according to his high school coach Bob Wager of Arlington Martin.

Fields, his mother and Wager spent Thursday in meetings at Stephen F. Austin which ultimately led to leaving Fields on the sidelines of the Lumberjacks practice with his new teammates.

“He is a resident Lumberjack,” Wager said.

Wager said Fields had multiple options on where he could move to from TCU, but was excited at the opportunity Stephen F. Austin afforded him after a roller-coaster 48 hours leading up to his arrival in Nacogdoches.

“We’re excited about the opportunity,” Wager said. “We appreciate Stephen F. Austin giving Devonte a chance to come in and make this team. We appreciate all that TCU has done to help guide and mature Devonte over the last two years as well.”
