The new College Football Playoff now has a trophy.
The National Championship Trophy presented by Dr Pepper was unveiled Monday at the College Football Playoff headquarters in Las Colinas.
The 35-pound, 24-karat piece of hardware will be awarded to the winner of the inaugural four-team playoff, which debuts this season. The championship game will be held Jan. 12, 2015, at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, with New Year’s Day semifinals at the Sugar Bowl and Rose Bowl.
The new trophy was modeled after the playoff’s “Gold Football” logo, which was revealed last year. Pentagram, the biggest independent design consultancy in the world, went to work on modeling the trophy after being awarded design of the logo. It was commissioned at the Polich Tallix fine art foundry in Rock Tavern, N.Y.

Bill Hancock, the executive director of the College Football Playoff, said he and his colleagues wanted the logo and trophy designs to go hand-in-hand.
The logo is anchored by the outline of a football, and that same outline tops the trophy and is the size of an actual football.
“Once Pentagram got the logo, they got the trophy because we wanted to be able to transform the logo into the trophy,” Hancock said. “We probably looked at three or four dozen designs for the trophy.”
The new trophy stands a little more than two feet tall and replaces the crystal ball awarded to winners of the BCS National Championship. On Monday, it was mounted on a 30-pound base, where it will remain until it is hoisted by its first champions, Hancock said.
“We wanted something that could be hoisted,” Hancock said. “We wanted it to be a classic piece of art, and we’ve achieved all those goals.”
