Three-run first help UT Arlington beat Troy in Sun Belt tournament

UT Arlington remained in the winners’ bracket of the Sun Belt Conference tournament with a 7-3 victory over Troy on Thursday night.

The Mavericks (32-25), winners of nine consecutive games, will play the Troy-Arkansas State winner at 12:30 p.m. Saturday.

Matt Shortall launched a three-run home run in the first inning and starter Zach Thompson earned the win, rebounding after a rough first inning.

Thompson threw five consecutive scoreless innings and pitched 72/3 innings, allowing two runs on four hits and a walk. He struck out eight.

Shortall’s home run, a mammoth shot to left-center field, was his 10th homer of the season. It was his 24th career home run, tying him with Richard Wilkerson for fifth place on the school’s all-time list.
