TCU’s Brun wins regional

TCU’s Julien Brun won the individual title Saturday at the NCAA San Antonio Regional at Briggs Ranch Golf Club in San Antonio.
It is Brun’s ninth career title at TCU and third of the season. He shot an even-par 72 in the final round to finish at 10-under for the tournament, one stroke ahead of Georgia’s Lee McCoy. Brun has won back-to-back titles after running away with the Big 12 championship at Whispering Pines in April.
The victory qualified Brun for spot in the NCAA Championships, but according to TCU, Brun will forgo the NCAA tournament to play as an amateur at the Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial Country Club, where he earned an exemption after winning the Spirit Invitational in November.
In the team comptition, TCU come up two strokes shy of advancing to the NCAA championship. The Horned Frogs carded a 3-over 293 on Saturday and finished sixth.
Baylor’s Whitney Canion (28-9) of Aledo pitched her second victory in two days as Baylor (44-13) defeated Tulsa 2-1 to advance to the Waco Regional final day today.
Elsewhere, Texas defeated Mississippi State 4-3 in an elimination game Saturday night after losing to Louisiana-Lafayette 3-2 at the Lafayette Regional. At the Norman Regional, Oklahoma beat Texas A&M 9-8, and A&M defeated Hofstra 7-0 in an elimination game later.
