UTA falls on another late Louisiana Lafayette rally

The Mavericks give up six runs in the last two innings.

For the second consecutive day at Clay Gould Ballpark, a late rally doomed UTA.

Louisiana-Lafayette, No. 2 in the coaches’ poll, scored two runs in the eighth inning to break a 3-3 tie and added four runs in the ninth en route to a 9-5 victory over UT Arlington on Saturday afternoon.

UTA (16-23, 8-9 Sun Belt) didn’t go down without a fight. After scoring one run in the ninth inning, the Mavericks got Justin Copeland to the plate as the tying run with the bases loaded. But Copeland fouled out and Levi Scott hit into a double play to end the game.

UTA starter Zach Thompson allowed three runs on 11 hits in 6 1/3 innings.

The series finale against the Ragin’ Cajuns (36-4, 16-1) is today at 1 p.m.
