Ranked fifth in the Sooner Athletic Conference, the Texas Wesleyan baseball team enters a pivotal stretch in its season as the SAC tournament looms on the horizon.
The Rams (23-20, 12-9 SAC) take on Northwood University in a three-game series beginning at 3 p.m. Thursday. TWU hosts Northwood for the series opener before traveling to Cedar Hill for the final two games.
Texas Wesleyan enters with a five-game winning streak after sweeping a SAC series against Southwestern Christian and taking a doubleheader from Dallas Christian College on Tuesday.
“As we go back into conference play we are wanting to build off of the success we have had in our recent games,” Texas Wesleyan coach Mike Jeffcoat said. “Our starters have done a great job as of late, especially our starters in Sam Martin and Mitch McLeod. Martin has lost just two games in two years now and has been an anchor of our pitching staff.”
Martin’s 2.08 ERA is third in the conference and his seven wins rank second in the SAC. McLeod is allowing hitters to hit just .220 off of him and has compiled a 3.52 ERA.
Jeffcoat hopes to lean on his team’s experience down the stretch. The Rams have reached the NAIA regionals six of the past eight seasons and have been to the regional championship game in four of those appearances.
“We have been fortunate to make good runs at the end of the season,” Jeffcoat said. “Hopefully we can build on that experience.”
Wesleyan pitcher gets weekly award
Wesleyan junior pitcher Amber Marlett earned her second Sooner Athletic Conference pitcher of the week award after allowing just one run in 12 innings pitched against two NAIA Top 25 opponents. She struck out five in a 1-0 loss to No. 21 Oklahoma Baptist and followed with a 3-0 win against No. 4 St. Gregory’s.
Tarleton sweeps awards
Tarleton State baseball swept its Lone Star Conference series against Angelo State and earned a sweep of the conference’s awards.
Colton Burleson was named the pitcher of the week after he earning his first-career shutout in an 8-0 against Angelo State on April 12. Burleson, a junior from Jasper, struck out six and threw his third complete game of the year. Noel Nevarez was named the hitter of the week after batting .583 and hitting two home runs.
