Arkansas State won the rubber game of a three-game Sun Belt Conference series Sunday afternoon, outslugging UT Arlington 14-10 at Clay Gould Ballpark.
The Red Wolves scored five runs in the top of the seventh inning to erase UTA’s 10-8 lead.
Dustin Jones opened the rally with a RBI triple and the next eight batters reached safely, including two bases-loaded walks to extend the lead to 13-10. ASU (13-10, 5-1) added its final run in the ninth on a sacrifice fly.
UTA (8-16, 1-5) wasted a 14-hit attack, including home runs by Ryan Bottger, Travis Silby and Matt Shortall. Bottger had four hits and two RBIs. Levi Scott had three hits and an RBI.
“It was an offensive day which means that you are going to get pitches to hit,” UTA coach Darin Thomas told utamavs.com. “... It was a game where we just kind of ran out of juice.”
The Mavericks complete a six-game homestand at 6:35 p.m. Tuesday against Baylor.
Bottger’s two-run homer keyed a three-run first for UTA that included John Michael Twichell’s RBI triple. ASU scored four in the second on a two-out rally that was extended by a UTA error and another four in the fifth.
Zach Thompson started for UTA and gave up eight runs, four earned, on six hits in four innings. Chase Weaver (2-1) got the loss, allowing three runs on four hits in 2 1/3 innings.
