Four teams snubbed by the NCAA Tournament were selected Sunday as the No. 1 seeds in the 32-team NIT: SMU, Minnesota, Florida State and St. John’s.
SMU opens the NIT on Wednesday night at home against UC Irvine (23-11). St. John’s (20-12) plays at home Tuesday night against Robert Morris (21-13. It is the record 30th NIT appearance for St. John’s.
Florida State (19-13) takes on Florida Gulf Coast. Minnesota (20-13) plays Big South regular season champion High Point (16-14).
The 32-team NIT field includes 13 automatic qualifiers, teams that won their regular-season conference titles without getting an NCAA bid.
All four teams playing No. 1 seeds were among those teams guaranteed NIT spots. FGCU (Atlantic Sun) and Robert Morris (Northeast Conference) lost in their conference tournament championship games.
A&M in CBI
Texas A&M will host Wyoming on Wednesday in one of eight first-round games in the College Basketball Invitational.
The other games Wednesday are South Dakota State at Old Dominion, Fresno State at UTEP, Princeton at Tulane, Morehead State at Illinois State, Radford at Oregon State, and Hampton at Penn State. Stony Brook is at Siena on Tuesday.
TCU men’s golf
TCU shot a 5-under 283 Sunday, climbing three spots to finish eighth of 14 teams at the Tucson National Invitational Tournament in Tucson, Ariz. TCU (868) trailed champion California by 37 strokes.
Paul Barjon (a season-low 68) and Julien Brun (70) led the Horned Frogs, tied for 28th among individuals at even-par 216. Sarosh Adi finished tied for 43rd at 74-219.
UT Arlington (14-15) lost to Harvard 12-1 as the Mavericks dropped their final game of the San Diego Classic II. UTA scored its only run in the bottom of the first when Britnea Barilli, who had singled, came home as Jolene Schaefer reached on an error. The Mavericks open Sun Belt play at South Alabama in a doubleheader Saturday.
Tarleton State roundup• Midwestern State (24-7) upset the Texans (28-3) 74-68 in the second round of the NCAA Division II tournament in Denver. De’Andre Upchurch led Tarleton with 23 points.
• Women’s basketball: The Texanns (22-9) lost 66-44 to No. 2-seed Colorado Mesa in the Division II tournament second round Saturday. Kiara Wright led the Texanns (22-9) with 14 points.
Briefly• Texas football: Longhorns junior fullback Chet Moss and junior defensive back Leroy Scott have been dismissed from the team for violation of team rules, head coach Charlie Strong said on Sunday.
• Track and field: Phyllis Francis caught Texas’ Ashley Spencer at the tape in the 1,600-meter relay Saturday night, giving Oregon the win and 44 points — a half-point better than UT for a fifth straight women’s title at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships in Albuquerque. The Ducks won the men’s title with 62 points, eight more than Arkansas.
