A look at Big 12 teams in NCAA Tournament

The conference lands seven teams in the “Big Dance.”

Iowa State

Record: 26-7  Region, seed: East, 3

First opponent: North Carolina Central, 8:50 p.m. Friday, San Antonio

Leading scorer: Melvin Ejim, 18.1 avg.

Leading rebounder: Dustin Hogue, 8.6 avg.

Notable: The Cyclones earned their third straight NCAA berth after beating Baylor for their first Big 12 tournament title since 2000.

Baylor

Record: 24-11  Region, seed: West, 6

First opponent: Nebraska, 11:40 a.m. Friday, San Antonio

Leading scorer: Cory Jefferson, 13.4 avg.

Leading rebounder: Cory Jefferson, 8.4 avg.

Notable: Won 11 of its past 13 games to secure the Bears’ eighth tournament berth and the first since 2012.

Kansas

Record: 24-9  Region, seed: South, 2

First opponent: Eastern Kentucky, 3:10 p.m. Friday, St. Louis

Leading scorer: Andrew Wiggins, 17.4 avg.

Leading rebounder: Joel Embiid, 8.1 avg.

Notable: The Jayhawks return to the NCAA Tournament for the 25th consecutive season, the nation’s longest active streak

Oklahoma

Record: 23-9  Region, seed: West, 5

First opponent: North Dakota State, 6:27 p.m. Thursday, Spokane, Wash.

Leading scorer: Buddy Hield, 16.8 avg.

Leading rebounder: Ryan Spangler, 9.4 avg.

Notable: It’s the second consecutive NCAA berth for the Sooners under coach Lon Kruger after missing the previous three years.

Texas

Record: 23-10  Region, seed: Midwest, 7

First opponent: Arizona State, 8:40 p.m. Thursday, Milwaukee

Leading scorer: Jonathan Holmes, 13.0 avg.

Leading rebounder: Cameron Ridley, 8.1 avg.

Notable: Tough region awaits the Longhorns if they escape AD Steve Patterson’s previous employer, including potential buzz kills Duke and Michigan.

Kansas State

Record: 20-12  Region, seed: Midwest, 9

First opponent: Kentucky, 8:40 p.m. Friday, St. Louis

Leading scorer: Marcus Foster, 15.6 avg.

Leading rebounder: Thomas Gipson, 6.5 avg.

Notable: The Wildcats have a tall task with Kentucky as an opener, but if K-State can pull it off it’ll get a chance to knock off its No. 1-seeded neighbor Wichita State in Round 2.

Oklahoma State

Record: 21-12  Region, seed: West, 9

First opponent: Gonzaga, 3:40 p.m. Friday, San Diego

Leading scorer: Marcus Smart, 17.8 avg.

Leading rebounder: Kamari Murphy, 6.2 avg.

Notable: The Cowboys quickly became a trendy pick to be a “dangerous” team Sunday evening. Most of that has to do with the team’s underwhelming ninth seed after a seven-game losing streak in Big 12 play.
