Texas State rallied with three runs with two outs in the bottom of the eighth inning to beat UT Arlington 3-1 Sunday and sweep a Sun Belt Conference opening series in San Marcos.
The Mavericks (5-14) has lost four straight. The Bobcats are 13-6 overall. UTA lost all three games to open a conference schedule for the first time since 1999.
With the wind gusting to more than 25 mph, two towering fly balls gave UTA trouble in the eighth.
UTA starting pitcher Zach Thompson (1-3) struck out nine in 7 2/3 innings, allowing nine hits. Greg McCall doubled and scored UTA’s run on a wild pitch in the second.
The Mavericks’ next game is at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday when they host Sam Houston State.
