If UT Arlington is going to get on a roll, Thursday night would be a good time start.
Coming off Saturday’s comeback over Western Kentucky in what coach Scott Cross called the biggest victory of the season, the Mavericks will close out the regular season with two road games against two of the Sun Belt Conference’s bottom-feeders.
The Mavericks will play at Troy at 7 p.m. Thursday before going on to South Alabama on Saturday.
UTA can’t finish worse than sixth, but can finish as high as fourth and earn a first-round bye in the conference tournament by the end of the weekend. They’ll need to sweep the weekend and have Arkansas State and Arkansas-Little Rock lose out to earn the bye.
The Mavericks are 6-0 against teams below them in the standings, but 2-8 against teams ahead of them. No matter how the cards play out this weekend, UTA won’t face a team above them in the standings until the second round of the tournament.
They’ll need the Sun Belt’s leading scorer, Reger Dowell, to carry the load after a career-high 37 points in Saturday’s win. He hit a game-winning 3-pointer to beat Troy 59-56 earlier this season.
