The UT Arlington baseball team fell to 0-4 at home after a 6-3 loss to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Friday night at Clay Gould Ballpark.
The Islanders (4-7) jumped out early by scoring two runs on four hits off Mavericks starter Zach Thompson (0-2) in the first two innings.
Thompson settled down and kept TAMU-CC scoreless until the seventh inning when he gave up a walk, a bunt single and a hit batter to load the bases with no outs. Zach Hobbs relieved Thompson, but gave up a two-run single on his first pitch. The Islanders would add another run in the inning to take a 6-0 lead.
Thompson, who now has a 5.74 ERA on the season, gave up five runs on six hits in 6 innings.
While the Islanders racked up six runs on nine hits in the game, the Mavericks (2-6) had trouble figuring out TAMU-CC starter Matt Danton.
Danton (2-1) came into the game with a 1.98 ERA on the season and kept the Mavericks off balance and off the scoreboard until the eighth inning.
Brady Cox led off the eighth with a single to left on the first pitch. With two on and two outs, Matt Shortall hit a double to right to score Cox and John Michael Twichell followed with a two-run double to right to chase Danton. Danton finished with three runs on six hits in 72/3 innings.
The Mavericks tried to narrow the lead in the ninth by loading the bases with one out, but two strikeouts ended the rally.
