Brandon Finnegan gave up five runs on eight hits as TCU lost 9-4 to Sam Houston State in the Houston College Classic on Friday at Minute Maid Park in Houston.

Finnegan (2-1) ran into trouble in the fourth inning when Hayden Simerly hit a one-out triple to right-center field and scored when Corey Toups followed with a double. Finnegan, who struck out 11 in 61/3, then hit a batter and gave up a base hit to load the bases. The junior left hander then threw two wild pitches two give the Bearkats a 3-0 lead.

TCU (6-3) had the bases loaded with only one out in both the third and sixth innings but failed to drive a run home. In the game the Horned Frogs left 14 runners on base.

Things continued to unravel for TCU, which lost to UT Arlington 10-2 on Tuesday, as Sam Houston (9-1) chased Finnegan from the game in the seventh when Anthony Azar’s two-out triple scored Ryan Farney. Finnegan, whose scoreless innings streak ended at 171/3 innings, was replaced by Trey Teakell.

Teakell saw his 23-inning scoreless streak end when he gave up four runs on four hits over 21/3 innings.

TCU tried to rally in the ninth inning when Dylan Fitzgerald drew a leadoff walk and Derek Odell, who is riding a six-game hitting streak, reached with a one-out single. Kevin Cron followed with a three-run home run, his first of the season, to left off Bearkats reliever Alan Scott.

The Frogs will look to snap their losing streak against Rice at 7:05 tonight.
