Lamar fired coach Pat Knight, son of Hall of Fame coach Bob Knight, with the Cardinals having won just six games the past two seasons.

Athletic director Jason Henderson announced the move Sunday. Lamar is 3-22 and 2-11 in the Southland Conference this season.

Knight was 29-62 overall during his three seasons with Lamar. He guided the Cardinals to the NCAA Tournament and a 23-12 record in his first season, closing the regular season with six straight victories and winning the Southland tournament title.

Lamar is 6-50 the past two seasons.

Sanna Nuutinen shot an even-par 72 and is tied for sixth, helping TCU finish 14th after the opening round of the Lady Puerto Rico Classic.

Nuutinen is just four strokes off the pace set by Arkansas’ Emily Tubert, who shot a 4-under 68. Nuutinen recorded two birdies and shot par on 14 holes.

UTA softball falls

Erim Struemph pitched a seven-hit shutout, leading Missouri State to a 3-0 victory over UT Arlington in the championship game of the UTA Maverick Invitational.

Struemph did not walk anyone and struck out eight. Britnea Barilli had two hits for UTA (6-4).

“I think this group is maturing,” UTA coach Kristie Fox said. “They are continually learning from their mistakes and gaining confidence.

“Missouri State run-ruled us earlier in this tournament and here we are competing.”
