UTA misses chances, falls to Incarnate Word

Incarnate Word 4 UT Arlington 1

UT Arlington had its chances but couldn’t cash in Saturday afternoon in a 4-1 loss to Incarnate Word at Clay Gould Ballpark.

The Mavericks (0-2) scattered 10 hits, none for extra bases, and left 12 men on base. The Cardinals (1-1) did enough against UT Arlington starter Zach Thompson (0-1) to even their record after two days of the UTA Invitational.

UT Arlington had a chance in the eighth with the bases loaded and one out, but Cardinals reliever Kris Looper got out of the jam when Ryan Bottger flied out in the infield and Travis Sibley struck out.

The Mavs also threatened in the third after falling behind 1-0. Bottger reached on an error and Sibley reached on a bunt single. Peter Cuomo moved the runners up with a sacrifice bunt. Derek Miller popped out before Darien McLemore walked to load the bases, but Matt Shortall popped out to end the inning.

The Cardinals added runs in the fifth and sixth to chase Thompson.

UT Arlington finally got to Encina in the sixth. Gregg McCall’s single up the middle scored Derek Miller, who reached on an error to start the inning. UIW reliever Alexis Garza retired the next two batters.

The Mavs wrap up the UTA Invitational at 3 p.m. Sunday with Jess Amedee on the mound against 2-0 Oklahoma State.
