Tall task awaits TCU at No.7 Kansas

Tough seven-game stretch to finish regular season begins Saturday for TCU.

TCU begins its final seven-game stretch run in the Big 12 regular season and it may not be pretty.

Beginning with a game at seventh-ranked Kansas (18-6, 9-2) at 3 p.m. Saturday, the Horned Frogs (9-14, 0-11) will play six teams that have been ranked in the Top 25.

The one that hasn’t yet been ranked, West Virginia (15-10, 7-5), just beat No. 16 Iowa State 102-77 and is tied with Oklahoma State in fourth place in the league. Kansas lost in overtime Monday at Kansas State. TCU plays at K-State on Wednesday. Four of the Frogs’ final seven games are on the road.

The first-place Jayhawks (18-6, 9-2) handled the Frogs 91-69 in Fort Worth on Jan. 25. Freshman guard Andrew Wiggins scored a then-season-high 27 points. He topped that with 29 points against Iowa State four days later. He leads KU with 16 points a game and is also averaging 5.9 rebounds.

Kansas may be without center Joel Embiid, who is battling a late January knee sprain and a back injury he suffered on Feb. 8.

“We’re not going to do anything to jeopardize him at all, but based on the doctors and the trainers, they’ll make the call, along with Jo being honest with us and how he’s feeling,” KU coach Bill Self told the Kansas City Star. “A lot of times there’s no reason to hold guys out if they’re healthy, too. We’ll make that determination in the next few days.”

Embiid leads KU with 7.8 rebounds a game and 61 blocks and is averaging 10.7 points. He had 14 points and six rebounds against TCU.

The Jayhawks are well-stocked, unlike the Frogs, who’ve been undermanned because of injuries.

Coach Trent Johnson has been limited to eight scholarship players, sometimes fewer, for much of the season.

TCU leads the country with 10 players who’ve missed games and five players who are out for the season: two for injuries, two because of transfer rules and one who is academically ineligible.
