UTA women seek third consecutive victory

UTA women’s basketball

The UT Arlington women’s basketball team is hunting down its first bona fide extended winning streak of the season.

After going 0-8 to start its debut season in the Sun Belt Conference, the Mavericks (3-18, 2-8 Sun Belt) have cobbled together back-to-back wins against Georgia State and Louisiana-Lafayette and will go for their third straight Wednesday against Louisiana-Monroe.

La.-Monroe (8-14, 4-6) took care of the Mavericks in short order in the first meeting 84-67 on Jan. 8 at College Park Center. But since that loss, UTA center Desherra Nwanguma has taken over.

The senior is averaging 19.6 points and 12.7 rebounds in the Mavs’ last seven games, which started with a 15-point, eight-rebound effort last month against La.-Monroe. In Thursday’s 73-54 victory over La.-Lafayette, Nwanguma had a career-high 34 points and 13 rebounds and earned Sun Belt Conference Player of the Week honors as UTA won its third game of the season.

La.-Monroe features forward Ashleigh Simmons, who is averaging 15.4 points and eight rebounds a game for the Warhawks, who lead the all-time series 31-20.
