The Lone Star Conference released its preseason baseball poll Thursday, with Texas A&M-Kingsville selected as this season’s favorite and defending regular-season champ Tarleton State picked third.
Tarleton State received three first-place votes, while TAMUK received 10 of the 18 first-place votes. Texans coach Bryan Conger said that he and his team don’t pay much attention to the poll.
“We can’t control their opinion,” Conger said. “We have a good core of players returning from our regular-season championship team and it was a slap in the face last season to be the only regular-season champion not selected to the NCAA Tournament.”
The Texans were 34-16-1 last season, 21-7 in the LSC, and held a three-game advantage over Kingsville at the end of the season.
Never miss a local story.
Conger’s message to his players this season is that they have to leave no doubt.
“Being the only team not selected last season, we have to make sure that we leave it on the field every single game,” said Conger.
Tarleton State opens the season Feb. 3 against Winona State at 10 a.m. at Minute Maid Park in Houston. The Texans were 2-1 last season at Minute Maid.
“We have talked to our players about not being overwhelmed when playing at a large field like that,” Conger said. “It’s still baseball even though it is in a bigger ballpark.”
Tarleton still perfect
The Tarleton State men’s basketball team remained undefeated Wednesday night as the fourth-ranked Texans cruised to an 87-63 victory over West Texas A&M.
Chuck Guy led the Texans with 17 points with De’Andre Upchurch adding 14 and Davene Carter contributing 11 points and 12 rebounds.
The Texans begin a three-game homestand at 7 p.m. Saturday against Eastern New Mexico.
Rams upset Wayland
The Texas Wesleyan men’s basketball team picked up its second victory against a Top 25 opponent this season by knocking off Wayland Baptist 75-71 on Jan. 16.
It was the Rams’ fourth victory in five games, and second against a ranked team during the stretch. Wesleyan edged No. 7 John Brown on Jan. 4 in overtime for the team’s first Sooner Athletic Conference victory.
