UTA women must lean on Suleiman against Texas State

Laila Suleiman is averaging 14.6 points in her last five games for the Mavericks, who are looking for their first Sun Belt victory.

Point guard Laila Suleiman’s career-high 25 points couldn’t lift the UT Arlington women’s basketball team past Louisiana-Lafayette on Saturday, but the senior has been a bright spot and will lead the Mavericks into San Marcos on Wednesday for a Sun Belt matchup with Texas State.

In UTA’s last five games, Suleiman has averaged 14.6 points. In conference play, she has been lights-out from long distance, connecting on 13 of her last 23 attempts from 3-point range.

Texas State (5-10, 2-2 Sun Belt) has been led by center Ashley Ezeh, who averages 13.9 points and 5.2 rebounds per game.

UTA post players like Desherra Nwanguma and Allyson Te’o must control the inside and let perimeter threats such as Suleiman and Tahlia Pope run free for good looks for the Mavs (1-14, 0-4) to record their first conference win.
