BBVA Compass Bowl
Vanderbilt vs. Houston
Noon Saturday, Legion Field, Birmingham, Ala.
Never miss a local story.
Records: Vanderbilt 8-4, 4-4 SEC; Houston 8-4, 5-3 American
Key points: Vanderbilt coach James Franklin is mentioned for almost every college head coaching vacancy. The Commodores had played in just four bowl games in program history when Franklin took over, but they are set to make a third straight postseason appearance in the Compass Bowl. Last season, Vanderbilt beat N.C. State in the Music City Bowl. Houston is trying to win back-to-back bowls for the first time since 1979-80. Cougars freshman quarterback John O’Korn has thrown for 2,889 yards and 26 touchdowns this season. Vanderbilt will likely start Patton Robinette at quarterback, in place of the injured Austyn Carta-Samuels. Robinette will need to find Jordan Matthews, who caught 107 passes for 1,334 yards and five touchdowns.
Tarrant ties: Vanderbilt freshman snapper Mack Prioleau played for All Saints Episcopal. Houston sophomore running back Kenneth Farrow, who played for Hurst L.D. Bell, has carried the ball 95 times for 486 yards and five touchdowns. Cougars junior backup quarterback David Piland went to Southlake Carroll, redshirt freshman defensive back Steven Aikens is from Arlington Seguin, freshman kicker Ty Cummings went to Southlake Carroll, sophomore linebacker Andrew Hogan played for Keller High, and freshman receiver Derek McLemore is from Southlake Carroll.
