The Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings rallied for five runs in the third inning to take a 5-3 lead and held on for a 6-4 victory to sweep the Fort Worth Cats 3-0 in the best-of-five series and clinch the United League Baseball title on Tuesday night at Harlingen Field.
The WhiteWings had six of their nine hits in the third off Cats starter Trent Evins, including three doubles and Tyler Krobetzky’s two-run single. The Cats also committed an error.
The Cats got to WhiteWings starter Dumas Garcia (4-0) early for three runs in the first three innings, but three relievers combined shut the Cats down in the final three innings to preserve the victory. Garcia (4-0) gave up four runs on five hits in six innings.
Adam Kam put the Cats on the board in the second inning with an RBI double, and Edwin Gomez tacked on a two-run triple in the top of the third for a 3-0 lead.
The Cats added a run on an error in the seventh to cut the lead to 6-4, and they had runners on first and second in the ninth, but Byron Minnich got out of the jam for his 24th save.
