Fort Worth’s four-game winning streak came to a crashing halt as first-place Rio Grande Valley hit four triples and beat the Cats 8-2 on Wednesday night at LaGrave Field.
The WhiteWings jumped to a 4-0 lead after three innings against starter and losing pitcher Trent Montgomery. They built the lead to 8-0 before the Cats scored single runs in the eighth and ninth.
The Cats (33-28) scored on Tim Alberts’ fielder’s choice in the eighth after singles by Ryan Lashley and Sam DiMatteo. Oscar Garcia singled in a run in the ninth.
WhiteWings second baseman R.J. Perucki, batting ninth, went 4 for 4 with a triple and two RBIs to lead a 13-hit attack.
Dumas Garcia got the victory, allowing only four hits in seven shutout innings.
The Cats had beaten Rio Grande Valley four straight in their back-to-back, six-game series. But Wednesday’s victory put the WhiteWings eight games ahead of the second-place Cats in the United League Baseball with four games left in this series.
