Fort Worth Cats still down in Valley, lose on error in eighth

The victory put the WhiteWings (40-16) 11 games ahead of the second-place Cats in the United League. It was the Cats’ seventh straight loss in Harlingen and third straight in this series.

Rio Grande Valley scored the tie-breaking run on a two-out error in the bottom of the eighth and beat the Fort Worth Cats 5-4 on Thursday night.

The victory put the WhiteWings (40-16) 11 games ahead of the second-place Cats in the United League. It was the Cats’ seventh straight loss in Harlingen and third straight in this series.

The Cats’ Oscar Garcia tripled with two outs in the ninth, but .400 hitter Ryan Lashley popped out to end the game and his 0 for 5 night.

Roger Bernal led off the WhiteWings’ eighth with a single, went to second on a sacrifice bunt and took third on a passed ball. He scored on an error.

The Cats’ Andres Rodriguez (3 for 4) tied the game 4-4 in the third with a home run.

Fort Worth led 3-0 after the top of the second on Tim Albert’s two-run double. But RGV scored four in the bottom half off Cats starter Trent Montgomery, who went the distance.
