Fort Worth Cats beat Brownsville behind Gooding’s 6-hit shutout

Jeremy Gooding threw a shutout to lead the Fort Worth Cats to a 5-0 victory over the Brownsville Charros in the series finale Sunday night at LaGrave Field.

Gooding (1-1) scattered six hits while walking none and striking out nine. He has allowed only three runs in 17 innings this season.

The Charros (17-34) stranded five runners on base, all in scoring position.

Third baseman Jose Duran had two hits and two RBI for Fort Worth, which will travel to Harlingen on Tuesday for a six-game series with the first-place Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings (37-16).

The Cats (29-24) jumped all over Charros starter Wes Alsup (0-6), who allowed four earned runs on five hits in 2 1/3 innings.

Sean O’Connell, Sam DiMatteo and Duran each had run-scoring hits for Fort Worth.

Right fielder J.J. Muse had three hits for Brownsville, which will travel to San Angelo on Tuesday to take on the Colts.
