Patrik Nemeth scored the game-winning goal at 14:30 of the first overtime to lift the Texas Stars to a 4-3 victory Tuesday night over the St. John’s IceCaps in Game 5 to capture the Calder Cup Championship in St. John’s, Newfoundland.
Stars’ Travis Morin, the AHL’s regular-season most valuable player, was named the Calder Cup Playoff MVP.
It was Texas’ second trip to the Calder Cup Finals, its first since 2010. The Stars have qualified for the playoffs in four of their five seasons and have posted 40-win seasons four times.
Texas posted a franchise-record 48 wins this season and claimed the Macgregor Kilpatrick Trophy as the AHL regular-season points champion, as well as the John D. Chick Trophy as the West Division Champions.
Stars make moves
The Dallas Stars bought out the final year of defenseman Aaron Rome’s contract, a move that will give the club more salary cap space.
Under the NHL collective bargaining agreement, teams were given two amnesty buyouts that must be used by the end of the month. The Stars will pay Rome two-thirds of the $1.6 million he was set to earn next season. That money won’t count against the salary cap.
