Nelson field featues 3 of world’s top 7 golfers

Irving event holding commitments from 20 of top 30 in FedEx Cup standings.

Officials at the HP Byron Nelson Championship are holding commitments from three of the world’s top seven golfers for their PGA Tour stop in Irving, with Matt Kuchar (No. 5), Jason Day (No. 6) and Jordan Spieth (No. 7) the early headliners.

The latest wave of commitments, announced Tuesday by tournament officials, shows nine of the world’s top 25 golfers and 20 of the top 30 players in the FedEx Cup standings slated to compete at the Four Seasons Resort, May 12-18. Other notable names in the Nelson field include Keegan Bradley, Jason Dufner, Dustin Johnson, Jimmy Walker, Patrick Reed, Charl Schwartzel, Matt Every, Ryan Moore and Sang-Moon Bae, the defending champ.

Walker, a former Baylor golfer who lives in Boerne, leads the 2013-14 PGA Tour in FedEx Cup points (2,046) and victories (3). He has five top-10 finishes this season. Dufner (2012), Bradley (2011) and Day (2010) are past Nelson champions. All three rank 19th or higher in the world rankings.

Spieth, a Dallas resident who finished as the runner-up at the 2014 Masters, will be making his fourth career appearance at the Nelson. Spieth, 20, first competed in the event as a high school junior, finishing in a tie for 16th in 2010 while competing on a sponsor’s exemption.
