The Dallas Stars are rolling out the green carpet for the franchises’ all-time leading scorer.
Monday, the Stars announced plans for the events surrounding the retirement of former Dallas Star Mike Modano’s No. 9 before the March 8 game against the Minnesota Wild, including a “green carpet” entrance hours before the game.
Fans should arrive in AT&T plaza outside the south entrance of the American Airlines Center at 4:30 p.m. March 8 as one of the Stars’ in-game hosts Celena Rae will introduce guests of the event including former Stars Brett Hull, Ed Belfour and Jere Lehtinen, as well as Stars’ owner Tom Gaglardi and general manager Jim Nill.
Modano-themed merchandise will be available during the Victory Green Carpet Show as well as a DJ and concessions.
At 6 p.m. the retirement ceremony will begin inside the stadium for those with tickets to the game and will be broadcast live on Fox Sports Southwest locally and on the NHL Network nationally.
Fans in attendance for the event will receive a Modano koozie, Modano trading cards and a replica banner and will hear the NHL’s leader in goals and points by an American born player accept the honor.
“I think it will be just as tough,” Modano said last summer when the date of his number retirement was announced. “When you have to address people and you’re all by yourself and you have to say a lot of things in a short amount of time and have to touch on a lot of memories and moments – it just kind of all hits you at once. It’s tough to prepare for. You have to visualize it or practice it, but nothing prepares you for that moment.”
Fans without tickets can watch the event live in AT&T plaza.
No individual game tickets to the March 8 contest are being sold as they have been included in 9-game ticket packages sold before and during the first half of the season. However, fans can purchase pro-rated season ticket packages before Jan 31 and claim a ticket to the event and game.
Following the game, an exclusive event will be held at the Omni Dallas Hotel with Modano and Stars alumni in attendance. Full season ticket holders and those who purchase pro-rated season tickets before Jan 31 can attend.
“It’s a lot of memories and a lot of things that happened over 25 or so years with this organization,” Modano said of the honor last summer.
