TCU defensive star Devonte Fields won’t play against SMU

Fields’ injury, sources say, could keep the defensive end out for multiple games.

TCU defensive end Devonte Fields will miss the Horned Frogs’ game against SMU, coach Gary Patterson said Friday morning.

Fields injured his foot against Texas Tech. TCU has not commented on the extent of the injury, but several sources have said Fields broke his foot and could miss multiple games. TCU (1-2) hosts SMU (1-2) at 11 a.m. Saturday at Amon G. Carter Stadium.

Fields, a freshman All-American and Big 12 Defensive Freshman of the Year in 2012, did not play in TCU’s opener against LSU on Aug. 31 and played only one quarter the next week against Southeastern Louisiana while serving part of his two-game suspension for breaking unspecified team rules in May. He still must serve the remaining quarter of his suspension, Patterson said.

In his two games this season, the former Arlington Martin High star did not look like the same player who led TCU with 18.5 tackles for loss and 10 sacks.

Against Texas Tech, he rarely put pressure on Red Raiders quarterbacks and appeared to be spying the quarterback. But Patterson dismissed that notion earlier this week saying that wasn’t the case.

Patterson said Fields was out of shape and it affected his play against Southeastern Louisiana.
