TCU football coach Gary Patterson has suspended sophomore defensive end Devonte Fields for the opening two games of the 2013 season because a violation of university and team policy, according to a statement released Wednesday.

Fields, a former Arlington Martin High School standout, was named The Associated Press Big 12 defensive player of the year and defensive newcomer of the year after leading the league in 2012 with 17 1/2 tackles for a loss and finishing second with nine sacks.

TCU opens the season Aug. 31 against LSU at Cowboys Stadium. It hosts Southeastern Louisiana the following week.
