Odell helps TCU rally late to beat USC in series opener

TCU’s Derek Odell went 3-for-4, including a fifth-inning home run, and drove in the eventual winning run in the eighth to lead the Frogs to a 5-4 victory over Southern Cal in the opener of a three-game series in Los Angeles.

Game 2 is schedule for 8 p.m. Friday and Game 3 is Saturday at 2 p.m.

The Frogs (22-23) trailed most of the way before rallying for a run in the seventh and two in the eighth. With two outs in the eighth, Jerrick Suiter had an RBI double and Odell followed with a run-scoring single for the Frogs’ first lead.

Odell’s home run in the fifth cut the lead to 3-2, but the Trojans (16-28) added a run in the bottom of the inning to go up 4-2. Odell led off the seventh with a single and scored on a single by Cody Jones to cut the lead to one.

TCU starter Preston Morrison gave up four runs — two earned — on 10 hits in six innings. Four relievers combined to hold the Trojans scoreless in the final three innings.
