Ian Kinsler ripped the go-ahead RBI single to right to score Craig Gentry, and the Texas Rangers went on to a 3-2 victory over the Los Angeles Angels in their home opener on Friday afternoon at Rangers Ballpark.
Gentry had a one-out single against Angels reliever Scott Downs in the eighth inning, and stole second. After pinch-hitter Jeff Baker struck out, Kinsler singled to right and Gentry raced home.
Joe Nathan closed out the game, working around a two-out walk in a scoreless ninth.
Rangers starter Derek Holland didn’t factor into the decision, although he pitched well. He allowed two runs on six hits with one walk and five strikeouts over seven innings.
With the game tied 1-1 going into the fifth, the Angels took a 2-1 lead on a two-out RBI double by Mike Trout.
But the Rangers tied it at 2-2 in the seventh when Adrian Beltre roped a two-out solo homer that just cleared the left-field fence.
The Rangers grabbed an early 1-0 lead in the second against Angels left-hander Jason Vargas. Nelson Cruz led off with a double to center and scored on a one-out triple down the right-field line by A.J. Pierzynski.
That lead didn’t last long, though. Angels catcher Chris Iannetta belted a solo home run to left to start the third inning and tie the game at 1-1.
Hamilton, in his return to Rangers Ballpark, received the expected boos when he was introduced before the game and all of his at-bats.
