Redshirt freshman quarterback Trevone Boykin has earned the right to back up Casey Pachall, TCU coach Gary Patterson said after Saturday morning's scrimmage.
Boykin, who attended West Mesquite High School while compiling more than 4,700 yards of offense and 58 touchdowns, earned the nod over last year's backup, Matt Brown.
Patterson said Brown will see some time at receiver and has practiced some there for the last week and a half. Freshman Tyler Matthews probably will redshirt the 2012 season.
Patterson said Boykin worked mostly with the first team during Saturday's scrimmage, the Horned Frogs' last before classes begin Monday. The Frogs don't practice again until Tuesday.
"He's a faster runner, and he's got a good arm," Patterson said of Boykin.
Boykin and Pachall have looked very sharp in August.
Saturday's scrimmage, which was closed to the media except for the final 15 minutes, was a step back from Wednesday's scrimmage, coach Gary Patterson said.
"What I wasn't happy with was the attitude, how we approached it," he said. Patterson said the defense started strong in the red zone but later gave up too many big plays.
"Wednesday we went 100 plays, and we gave up two big plays, that was it," he said. "One against the 1s, one against the 2s. Today we gave up three or four, and we can't do that."
TCU is ranked No. 20 in the AP Top 25, released Saturday. The Frogs also are ranked No. 17 in the USA Today coaches' poll. Sports Illustrated has the Frogs at No. 21.
"Hopefully we'll try to back it up," Patterson said. "[Saturday] was not a backup day. Wednesday was a pretty good day."
Ex-Gator set for TCU
Ja'Juan Story, a four-star receiver as a high school recruit, is transferring from Florida to TCU.
Story will have to sit out the 2012 season but will have three years of eligibility remaining with the Frogs. TCU hasn't yet officially announced the addition, but Story attended practice Thursday and is expected to start class Monday, making the move official.
Story was recruited by TCU linebacker coach Randy Shannon and is good friends with Frogs safety Jamie Byrd, who attended a nearby Florida high school.
Freshman DE Josh Carraway (from Flower Mound Marcus) had an operation on his knee and will be out a month, Gary Patterson said.
