Career-best games by senior guards Erick Neal and Nathan Hawkins powered the UT Arlington men to an 89-77 victory over Appalachian State on Thursday night at College Center Park.
Neal had 38 points - the sixth highest single-game total in UTA men’s history - that featured a 5-of-8 performance from 3-point range and 11 of 12 free throws, including 7 of 8 in the final minute to keep the Mountaineers at arm’s length.
Hawkins scored a career-high 19 points on a 7-of-11 shooting effort that included three 3-pointers. UTA center Kevin Hervey also had a fine effort with 18 points and 14 rebounds.
The Mavericks, who trailed most of the first half and a good portion of the second, improve to 14-10 overall and 5-6 in Sun Belt Conference play. Appalachian State falls to 9-15 and 4-7.
Never miss a local story.
UTA women 49, Appalachian State 48: Rebekah VanDijk put in a contested basket at the rim with eight seconds to play to lift the Lady Mavericks (12-10, 6-5 Sun Belt) to an exciting victory over Appalachian State (6-16, 4-7).
UTA trailed by four in the final minute before scraping back. The deciding basket came after the Lady Mavs forced a jump ball and took over possession. VanDijk got position on the low block and scored only her second field goal of the night for the game winner. She ended with only four points, but the two biggest.
