What a great idea

Dr. John Crawford’s Nov. 20 letter was a well-written idea. Having politicians live with the rules they set for the rest of us for five years before implementing the change is a fantastic idea.

This whole healthcare bill is worthless. I have had it with the politicians living a life of luxury while we, the public, work our tails off to pay taxes so they can live that way.

Ask our elected officials why they don’t come under the plan and their response is the same, "We have our own plan."

I am a charitable person by nature, but my generosity stops when those in need do nothing to help themselves. They continue to smoke, drink, do drugs and refuse to work as long as there is a government handout to be had.

America needs to elect some statesmen to fill the slots in Congress that are up in 2010 and 2012, along with a fiscally conservative president in 2012

Right now the president and Congress are borrowing money and spending or giving it away faster than the Bureau of Engraving and Printing can print it. It needs to stop and stop now.

Free to succeed or fail

As I am one of those uninsured Americans everyone keeps mentioning in this healthcare debate, I feel compelled to weigh in on this matter.

This is the greatest country in the world. The wealth and prosperity produced here are due to the fact that we are free to succeed or fail based on our hard work or lack thereof. I do not blame other people for my circumstances.

I like the fact that my children will be able to claw their way into the middle class if they have the desire and the work ethic to do so. This opportunity would not exist in a socialist country.

I also am a veteran. Whenever I hear people lamenting their lack of health coverage, it always reminds me of those who have sacrificed their very lives for our freedom and our liberty. I would not be worthy of that sacrifice if I were willing to give up my freedom, live in a nanny state and bankrupt my country just so I could get health insurance.

Takes one to know one

It makes me laugh when I hear our politicians in Washington say we need to clean up the corruption in Afghanistan. Talk about the pot calling the kettle black.

Taxed to death

Memo to reporter Gordon Dickson (See: "State, federal officials consider raising gas taxes," Nov. 23): If you want your readers to believe that you’re writing a news story rather than an opinion piece, why not admit that toll roads are not the only alternative to gas tax increases?

While you’re at it, you might make some reference to the well-documented wasteful spending of the Texas Department of Transportation.

If you really want to go out of your way, you could interview state Sen. Jane Nelson, or Michael Quinn Sullivan of Empower Texans, or one of the countless thousands of ordinary citizens who attended the April 15 tea party or the Sept. 12 rally.
