Cheers: To a young woman who waited behind us during heavy snow on March 6 as we were having difficulty getting traction on the ice on Davis Boulevard. Your caring concern was appreciated more than you know.
-- Mary Merryfield, North Richland Hills
Cheers: To the sixth-floor nursing staff at Harris Methodist Fort Worth. When I was a patient there recently, everyone was so nice to my husband and me. Cheers also to Dr. Nghi and his assistant Christie.
-- Ruby Sue Marshall, Edgecliff Village
Jeers: To dog owners who didn't pick up after their animals during the April 26 Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure. I slipped in poo, ruined my new sneakers, broke my ankle, incurred medical expenses and smelled like dog poo the rest of the day. It's a privilege to participate in this walk, which shouldn't be disgraced.
-- Tracy Richeson, Arlington
Cheers: To Craig at Ocean Rock Seafood for making our mother's birthday a very special occasion. Your generosity and thoughtfulness were greatly appreciated. The food and service were outstanding.
-- Sheryl Blum Stevenson, Fort Worth
Cheers: To Del Frisco's Double Eagle Steak House in Fort Worth, where we celebrated our anniversary. Special cheers to Gina, Max and Michael, who gave us very special attention. The food and service were perfect. We'll be back.
-- Ginger and Tim Young, Burleson
Jeers: To Bob Gordon for his May 3 jeer of a Fort Worth Fire Department crew! Where do you expect them to park an emergency vehicle -- in the back of the lot!? That vehicle and crew must be able to respond at a moment's notice, and every second counts.
-- Rick Cornell, Arlington
Jeers: To Bob Gordon for not understanding that fire lanes are for parking fire trucks.
-- Doug Packer, Keller
Jeers: To Bob Gordon for his jeer of the Fort Worth Fire Department. Firefighters are on duty whether they're eating supper or relaxing at the station. The fire lane is for fire apparatus parking. The quicker the egress from a parking lot, the quicker the response time.
-- Mark Cross, Arlington
Cheers: To our parents at Hill School of Grapevine. They worked many hours to enable us to be ready to start classes March 31 in our new facility without missing any instructional time. They worked tirelessly and cheerfully. We couldn't have done it without their help.
-- Helen Owen, Southlake
Cheers: To Aquamaid Pool Service for repairing my pool heater at the last minute for a hockey team's end-of-season party. I called Aquamaid at the last minute because another pool service said for a week that we were next on the list but never showed up!
-- Twyla Williamson, Arlington
Cheers: To Anabella's Cafe and Catering in Mansfield for stepping in to cater our son's wedding after the original caterer canceled a month before the event. Special cheers to Russell and Nancy for everything they did. The food and service were fantastic.
-- Gary and Vickie Foster, Grand Prairie
Jeers: To the Department of Veterans Affairs for allowing profligate spending by its staff, courtesy of government-issued credit cards that we, the taxpayers, pay for. The unauthorized personal purchases totaling more than $2.6 billion warrant prison terms and an overhaul of the system that allowed them.
-- Seneca Maskell, Fort Worth
Cheers: To Mike Camp, service manager at Texan Ford in Arlington. When I took my pickup in for transmission work, he kept me informed at every step and did the job for a fair price.
-- Rique Daggs, Arlington
Cheers: To the kind lady who paid for my lunch April 1 at the Mexican Inn on Eighth Avenue. I was told that I reminded her of her grandmother. What a nice compliment. Your kindness was greatly appreciated.
-- Helen L. Gaston, Fort Worth
Cheers: To the young man who treated me to breakfast April 1 at Tres Betos. Our conversation was more of a blessing than could be yearned for. Despite our generational and cultural differences, he reminded me that many of us still seek those values in life that makes the Kingdom better for all.
-- George Nichols, Watauga
Cheers: To the kind gentleman who surprised two ladies by paying for their lunches -- including complimentary dessert -- at Bennigan's on April 7. Please know that you made our day and that we're very grateful.
-- Flo Mayer, Lexington, Ky.
Cheers: To cities that are installing red-light cameras. People opposed to them apparently think that the streets are their personal raceway. As for the suggestion that rear-end collisions are caused by drivers slamming on their brakes to stop suddenly at a red light: You're supposed to drive one car length behind another vehicle for every 10 miles per hour of speed.
-- Richard Orton, Fort Worth
Cheers: To James B. Roberts for taking time to visit every week. His moral support, good humor, insight and all the assistance he provides in the affairs that I'm unable to tend to are appreciated beyond expression. He's an inspiration, a teacher and a friend.
-- William A. Roberts, Fort Worth
Jeers: To an online medical service that said it would get help for my sick wife but called back to say that it doesn't work with our insurance company. I said that I'd pay out of pocket, but the policy was to accept payments only from insurance companies or Medicare. I e-mailed a sharp complaint and was told in a return phone call that the policy was being reviewed. But I never heard from them again.
-- Patrick Dunavan, Saginaw
Cheers: To the city of Hurst for helping people clean up after the recent storms. Crews were working at all hours. Cheers also to the man who helped me move tree limbs that were too heavy for me, and to Oncor for trimming trees during the night so that we could have electricity after four days of being without.
-- Cheryl Stevens, Hurst
Jeers: To the lowlife who took a patient's walker out of the Plaza Surgical Building on April 11. It was placed there while the patient was taken up in a wheelchair to her doctor. I hope this tweaks your thoughts.
-- Jean Witten, Fort Worth
Cheers: To Coventry and Gattis Air Conditioning and Heating Services Co. After another company came to my home and tried to pressure me into fixing a problem that I didn't think I had, Gregg and the C&G team reassured me that my system was running great. It's an honest company that I'll trust from now on with all my heating and air conditioning problems.
-- Debra Hurley, Grapevine
Jeers: To a local doctor for charging a retired disabled Navy veteran $5 a page for a copy of my medical record.
-- Laura J. Morris, Fort Worth
Cheers: To the faculty, staff, students and parents of North Crowley High School for presenting the program "Shattered Dreams" to our students. Education is more than books and scores on the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills test -- it's about equipping youth with the tools to make good choices and understand the consequences.
-- Lisa Al-Saigh, Fort Worth
Jeers: To whoever was responsible for the portable toilets at Mayfest on May 1-4. Mayfest was great as usual, but none of the restrooms had toilet paper Friday afternoon and evening. They were also very dirty.
-- Donna Roberts, Westworth Village
Cheers: To Fort Worth's officer Ernie Pate and others who served at Mayfest. After one of my first times out after a lengthy illness, the walk back to the parking area far exceeded my endurance. The officers ensured that I was OK and helped us get our car through barricades to allow me to be picked up near the main entry gate. God bless you.
-- Arlene Hawley, Willow Park
Jeers: To the Star-Telegram for the May 2 gardening story that began: "It's time to give your lawn its first haircut of the season." Maybe in Philadelphia, where the story originated. But this is Texas, and I've been mowing my grass for three months. Can't the Star-Telegram find someone from here to write about the yard?
-- Mark Watson, Trophy Club
Cheers: To the Star-Telegram reporters and editors for finally, finally exposing the JPS Health Network travesty in the six-part series that ran April 27-May 2.
-- Karen Martin, Fort Worth
Jeers: To the Star-Telegram for selling auto advertisements that have the front end of the cars coming out of the ads into the news columns. I understand the need for ad revenue, but the paper doesn't seem to understand that customers don't want the ads leaping out at them.
-- G.K. Worley, Fort Worth
Cheers: To Star-Telegram reporter Max B. Baker for his insightful reports on the Republican judicial races.
-- Modean Barry, Fort Worth
Jeers: To the Star-Telegram for being MIA at the races at Texas Motor Speedway, which is in Fort Worth. The other paper was there, but not you. For many years, you gave away newspapers in the campgrounds and in the stands. Great idea for Fort Worth. No longer.
-- Steve Unger, Lake Kiowa
Jeers: To Star-Telegram writer Gaile Robinson for omitting the Amon Carter Museum's masterpiece Bluebonnets in her April 6 story on the Julian Onderdonk exhibition at the Dallas Museum of Art. Why not cheer for the home team?
-- Ruth C. Stevenson, Fort Worth
Cheers: To Star-Telegram Watchdog columnist Dave Lieber. He goes the extra mile to assist with consumer grievances and generally solves the problem with his savvy diplomacy.
-- Dee Cantrell, Fort Worth
Jeers: To the Star-Telegram for making no mention of a prominent day in U.S. history in the April 18 paper. The Doolittle raid of April 18, 1942, was the first time in World War II when we were able to attack Japan on its homeland. Anyone know if any of the 80 crewmen are still alive?
-- R.H. Rastall, Crowley
Cheers: To the Star-Telegram for covering Pope Benedict XVI's visit to the United States. The media treated the pope with extensive news clips, but the newspaper, with its color pictures and ample space, did him proud.
-- Dick Templeton, Fort Worth
Jeers: To the Star-Telegram for publishing awful photos of the NASCAR drivers in the April 3 Race Week section. They looked like bad driver's license pictures or police mug shots. Jeers to NASCAR if those were the only photos supplied.
-- Shaun Eason, Arlington
Cheers: To the nurses and staff in the critical care unit at Harris Methodist H.E.B. During a recent four-day stay, the respect, integrity, compassion and excellence of service were the best ever. These professional, family-oriented people had a sense of pride in their work and were interested not only in my medical condition but my thoughts on life in general.
-- John M. Myers, Haltom City
Cheers: To Jean Johnson in home fashions and Mary Anderson in appliances at the Sears store at North East Mall for helping with a recent purchase. Your willingness to go above and beyond makes you an asset to Sears.
-- Juanita Carper,
North Richland Hills
Cheers: To Ida and Jeff Reagan of Watauga, who know how to keep a promise.
-- Joy and Ken Noel, Fort Worth
Cheers: To retired Saginaw Police Chief Gene Springer for instilling in his officers courtesy, respect and judgment when dealing with the public. During the years that I spent as a Saginaw officer and supervisor, I learned many things from him, but the most important was how to treat the public. Thanks again, Chief.
-- Chief Dick Rodgers,
Tioga Police Department
