Cheers: To Pastor Frederick Haynes for not forsaking his church and 25,000-member congregation to accept leadership as NAACP president. The organization’s eventual pick was Ben Jealous. Haynes has nothing to be "jealous" of and will still stretch an assistive hand to the NAACP and its objectives if the need arises.
Jeers: To Gov. Rick Perry for renting a house for $9,900 a month for the past nine months. He should be ashamed of spending taxpayer money like that. A very nice home at a third of the cost would be better. Just imagine the good that the money could have done each month had it been spent on children, healthcare or education.
Cheers: To Dale Nay, an off-duty Horseshoe Bend firefighter who, as he drove by, noticed smoke behind my daughter’s house and stopped just in time to help her escape before the house was engulfed. Cheers also to his wife, who gave my daughter her own shoes.
Cheers: To Ruby Lillian Howard, who was recently honored at a retirement reception at Waverly Park Elementary School. Ruby was a teacher with passion, commitment and love for her students and the profession. I was honored to have taught with her years ago, and my son was enriched to have her as his preschool teacher. Special cheers to Principal Mary Jane Marshall for being a supportive administrator!
