Mac Engel is right, soccer will eventually creep into American major sports.
Trouble is, most viewers don’t understand the game. A score just looks like an accident. Much the same is true of our baseball or football, but we understand that is part of our game.
I lived in England for 11 years and got to the point that I could reasonably follow and enjoy soccer. I last lived there in 1988 and have lost that ability. Soccer probably will become a major sport, but will have to wait until enough of us old fossils die off. I am almost 86-years-old.
I remember watching an American football game between two Air Force base teams, played in Wales, the home of Rugby.
The announcer was trying to explain the game to the Welsh crowd. I remember him saying, ”Now you see that chap in white, with the number 10 on him. He is called the quarterback and is the field general. He tells those other chaps on his team what to do in those little conferences they have between plays!”
Now that’s a quick and dirty explanation of American football, as you are likely to find!
