It is unfortunate that William Koehler’s May 6 column (see: “Parents needed, not some teachers”) drew conclusions about charter schools based on explorations of three high-performing charter systems.
While it is certainly possible the sampled schools are doing well, that doesn’t mean they are representative of all charter schools.
In fact, some studies claim that students in charter schools, some for-profit and some not, achieve at no greater level than comparable students in traditional schools.
Further, many charter schools cherry-pick their students, have excessive expulsion rates, and frown upon serving limited-English-proficiency children or students with disabilities.
Three of anything does not make a meaningful sample!
