My name is Mariana Xotlanihua, and I am in Mrs. Pulis’ fourth grade class at Westlake Academy public charter school. In our room we have a helping wall. A couple of months ago, we went and visited elderly people at Silverado Memory Care. Now we are planning to do a marathon to raise awareness for endangered and extinct animals. Kiera Garry came up with the idea that we support WWF (World Wildlife Fund), but we also had other ideas. So we voted, and WWF had the most votes.
We were planning to raise money to give to the organization, but a couple of weeks later, Mr. Harding, our primary principal, came into our room and talked to us. He said, “It is better to take action than to take money from someone else and give it." So as soon as he left, we came up with different ideas, and Tabitha Fitzgerald and other classmates said, “We should do a marathon walk.” We figured that we need to come up with a name. A couple of ideas later, we came up with Walk with a Cause.
We are planning to do the marathon March 4 from noon to 2 p.m.
For the we will walk around the school. There will be a snack station and a medical station. We will take a route around the school that was planned by the marathon team (Myla Argo, Ella Thidemann, Ashlynn Deras, Tabitha Fitzgerald and Eleanor Krieger). The presentation teams will also present in the PYP (Primary Year Program) classes. They are going to split into groups of three and email teachers, and they will find a date when they are free. There are five teams, and they are called Marathon team, presentation team, Black cow article team, poster team and the letter to the newspaper team, which is my team. We are also planning to make T-shirts and wear them the day of the marathon.
So thanks to Kiera Garry and Tabitha Fitzgerald, we have a marathon planned.
This has been a great success so far. I hope we will make an impact on the animals and raise awareness for them too, but also have fun along the way.
