Recently articles have appeared in Dallas-Fort Worth newspapers discussing the implementation of the Affordable Care Act, which have included the sentiment that compassion needs to be part of the discussion.
Texas has the largest percentage of uninsured residents of any state in the union. This is shameful.
More than 4 million working adults in Texas are uninsured. This leads many of them to turn to emergency departments after health has deteriorated.
Never miss a local story.
They need to be receiving primary care from outpatient providers. This will improve health, and take pressure off hospital emergency departments.
About 1 million of these adults could receive health coverage if Texas were to implement the Medicaid expansion available through the ACA. This could help people with chronic health conditions (like diabetes and hypertension) avoid complications, such as heart attacks and strokes, and live longer healthier lives.
Being an election year, citizens should hold their legislative and state elected officials accountable as well as candidates for these positions. Not only is this the smart thing to do, but the right thing to do.
