My five cents

1The Kansas City Chiefs are wearing Dallas Texans helmets today. The logo is a map of the state of Texas. That is not going over well with the taxpayers of Kansas City, who are forking over $250 million in sales tax revenue to renovate the stadium of an 0-4 team.

2If the Buffalo Bills fire Dick Jauron before the season is finished, the obvious interim replacement is Bobby April. He is the assistant head coach, he works with most of the roster as the special teams coordinator, and he has the most coaching experience of the Bills’ coordinators.

3Peyton Manning is off to the best start of his career, and he’s doing it without Marvin Harrison. Truth be told, in recent seasons, Harrison held back Manning and the Colts’ offense. Without having to worry about Harrison’s ego, Manning can distribute the ball at his discretion. He now has four selfless receivers to go with Reggie Wayne.

4Vince Young is doing his best to stay out of any quarterback controversy. Starter Kerry Collins is under fire because of the Titans’ 0-4 start, and more than 70 percent of voters in a Tennessean.compoll said Young should be the starter this week. Jeff Fisher, though, has given Collins a vote of confidence.

5Houston Texans outside linebacker Brian Cushing, the first-round pick who missed preseason with a knee injury, has been terrific on the strongside. He leads the team with 33 tackles, including 18 unassisted. He has four tackles for loss and three hits on the quarterback.

Who’s hot

Brett Favre completed 24 of 31 passes for 271 yards, three touchdowns, no interceptions, wasn’t sacked and had a 135.3 passer rating in the Minnesota Vikings’ victory over his former team. Favre, who turned 40 on Saturday, is the NFL’s third-rated passer at 104.7, trailing only Peyton Manning and Drew Brees. Favre has completed 68 percent of his passes with eight touchdowns and one interception. Only one quarterback in NFL history has made the Pro Bowl at age 40 or older — Warren Moon in 1997 with Seattle — and none has started a playoff game.

Who’s not

New York Giants kicker Lawrence Tynes, who beat the Cowboys on the last play, has missed from 21, 29 and 38 yards this season. The Giants worked out veterans Matt Stover and Matt Bryant last week, which sent a message to Tynes, if nothing else.

He said it

"It’s a humbling experience. I feel like going through that, it made me look at the world a different way, look at my teammates a different way. Hopefully, it works out for the best." — 49ers rookie receiver Michael Crabtree, after signing a contract with almost $17 million in guaranteed money.

Numbers game

1-11The record of the three teams that changed offensive coordinators at the end of the preseason. The Chiefs are 0-4, the Bills are 1-3, and the Bucs are 0-4.
