The University of North Texas’ Homecoming king and queen will remain a male and female duo.

Students voted down a referendum originating in the Student Senate that would have allowed same-sex couples to be eligible for the university’s Homecoming titles.

Results were announced Monday afternoon for the election, which was conducted last week. “No” votes outnumbered “yes” votes by a margin of 58 to 42 percent, or 2,836 to 2,059. A total of 4895 students voted.

UNT students elect Homecoming favorites as a couple instead of individually.

“It is a disappointment,” said David Reed of the Tarrant County Lesbian and Gay Alliance. “I’m not sure that it’s completely unexpected though I’m surprised at the spread between the yes and no votes.”
